What a thrill to have a personal presentation and go on a whale watch excursion led by renowned Whale expert Jackie Hildering. Known as the “Marine Detective” and featured on Animal Planet, Jackie shared not only her extensive knowledge of whales and the entire related ecosystem, but she shared her passion, which was contagious.
We started from picturesque Telegraph Cove. We enjoyed a presentation in the Marine Museum which included listening to whale calls recorded through hydrophones. Once out on the boat, we again listened to whales communicating but this time it was live and right beneath and around us.
It wasn’t long on our boat trip before we saw and listened to the squeaks and whistles of an active pod of Orcas. Then, a group of humpbacks arrived and treated us to quite a show of gliding through the waters with their raised backs before the culminating tail flap. Jackie Hildering could recognize the whales by their markings, and filled us in on the family dynamics. Her expertise made a great whale watch even more meaningful.
We returned to quaint Telegraph Cove for a dockside barbecue dinner with our new travel friends at the Old Saltery Pub.
