Seldom-visited White Pocket can only be reached by driving more than an hour over sand. Four-wheel drive is required, and our experienced and barefoot tour guide, Margie, let air out of the tires to provide more traction. After a stop to view the California Condors flying above the cliffs, we bounced our way over the dunes to our destination which looked like a fantasy landscape on an alien planet.
We hiked through a gnarled expanse of multi-colored natural sandstone artwork . White Pocket has twists, multi-color striations of white, yellow, red, orange, and pink. Hills rise up with swirls of color resembling an ice-cream sundae. Unique compositions are literally found every few steps in this world-class photographic wonderland.
