Stonington is a quaint fishing town on the southern half of Deer Isle, an island located about two-thirds the way up the Maine coast, and about an hour’s drive from Acadia National Park.
19th century buildings line the narrow and winding streets of downtown, enhancing the feeling of being transported back in time. The town has few nice restaurants, and is an artists’ enclave as well as a nature-lover’s paradise.
And for a very unusual experience of nature, travel to the 98-acre Crockett Cove Woods Preserve on Deer Isle and stroll through a fog forest. The densely packed red spruce reaches high in the coastal sky and seem to keep the swirling ocean fog in place. A self-guided nature trail winds through the majestic trees surrounded by a carpet of mosses, ferns and lichens.
