Not what one would expect to find in the Pine Barrens in South Jersey – we typically go there to canoe in winding, tea-colored rivers through forests of pine trees and solitude. A different experience awaited us as we attended a photography workshop hosted by an amazing photographer and really nice guy – Richard Lewis. Anticipating a few old airplane relics tucked away among the miles of pines, we were surprised to find this unique site was fenced in next to a major road, and was much, much bigger than we expected.
This unique assemblage of aircraft, busses, trucks, machines of all sorts, and an odd assortment of bizarre relics provided an endless opportunity for fun photographs. For those of us that enjoy images of decay, rust and old, decrepit junk, this is a photographer’s playground. Our photo guide, Richard Lewis, gave us a tour of the area (and told us how not to get lost among the ruins!) before letting us loose to wander among the skeletons of airplanes and rusted vehicles with broken windows. And throughout, we found whimsical surprises of mannequin parts emerging from under lawnmowers, or creepy faces staring from cockpit windows.
So take a journey with us through our photographs. This location is not open to the public, so if you want to check it out for yourself, signing up for a photo tour with Richard Lewis is the way to go. And, Richard will gladly share his photo tips and advice to help everyone come away with images that celebrate the history and intrigue of the passing of machines…. decaying in this hauntingly fascinating graveyard.
