The Graffiti Pier, sometimes called the “Graffiti Underground” is a slowly-eroding but colorfully-decorated concrete structure that juts into the Delaware River in Port Richmond. The remains of a coal loading dock have been transformed into a street art hotspot, covered with years of graffiti. Technically private property, the site has been popular with graffiti artists, paint-ball teams and photographers for years, until it was shut down by police in May, 2018, citing safety concerns. But there is good news – Conrail, the current owner, is working with the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation to turn the jetty into a public park. Studies are underway to determine the structure’s stability and to create new entryways and parking.
Jim and Betsy visited the site a few times before it shut down, and really enjoyed the photographic opportunities. And everytime we went, the artwork was different, as graffiti artists constantly painted new art on top of old. On one visit, we almost became the targets of a group of paint-ballers, who turned put to be very friendly and coordinated their battles around our photography.
