One of our favorite short paddle excursions is in Phoenixville, PA, not far from our home. A combination of river paddling and serene canal paddling provide variety and an abundance of beautiful scenery for an easy, two-hour excursion. This is a loop, so no shuttle is needed to get back to your car. And an added bonus includes a stop along the way for some food and brew if desired!
Begin your excursion at Lock 60 at Schuylkill Canal Park, 400 Towpath Rd., Mont Clare, Pa. Park near the Locktender’s House at the end of the narrow road, and put your canoe in on the Schuylkill River.
Paddle down river under some beautiful stone bridges and enjoy the scenery. When you see power lines, paddle quickly to your left and take-out at this portage sign.
A short portage up a grassy path under the power lines take you to the Canal, where a dock allows for easy access to the water.
If you want a break from paddling, pull the canoe over at Fitzwater Station and enjoy a beer and a sandwich from the deck overlooking the canal.
Enjoy the wildlife and scenery along the way. Paddle through some quaint backyards until you get back to the Locktender’s House to complete your journey.
